Those black lines are known as filtration soiling. Your carpet acts like a filter, trapping very fine particles that collect along the baseboards. Over time, these particles can accumulate, especially with infrequent vacuuming. Filtration soiling is not part of the normal cleaning process, although we may notice some improvement. Yes, oriental and other rugs should be vacuumed regularly, especially in high-traffic areas. Eighty percent of soil in rugs is dry particulate matter, which acts like sandpaper and accelerates wear if not removed. Thicker rugs that are not regularly vacuumed can become impacted with dry soil over time, making it difficult, if not impossible, to remove.
